As the seasons change, there’s no better time to switch up your style. According to Mikey Kardashian, celebrity stylist and Sally Beauty expert partner, copper is the hair colour you need to have this autumn/winter. Mikey has worked with the likes of Adele, Rochelle Humes and Amanda Holden, so you know that we’re giving you the inside scoop.

“Copper-based colours can really scare people, but they’re absolutely gorgeous when done right and you can easily tone them up or down to suit a variety of skin tones, so there’s nothing to be scared of!”

“There are two main copper-based colours to ask for this season - the first is toasted chestnut, an ultra-rich and warm shade that’s perfect for adding depth to darker hair tones. The other is pumpkin spice, a light and soft copper wash that’ll give blondes an instant autumnal look.”

So, what exactly should you ask your stylist for?

“For a soft, subtle and low-maintenance look, ask your stylist to incorporate chestnut tones into the hair with balayage. You could also add in some golden blonde tones for a beautiful multi-dimensional look, that’ll add the illusion of body and depth – great for those with flat, thin or limp hair! If you’re skin tone is on the cooler side, you can opt for a more vanilla blonde to accompany your chestnut hue. ”

“For something a bit more unique, try panelling. It’s still having a moment on social media and is a really easy way to frame the face and bring some colour to your do, without committing to an all-over shade. Ask your stylist for colour on 1-inch panels on a centre parting, or If you’re doing it yourself, make sure to invest in a pin tail comb like this Salon Services Antistatic Pin Comb, which will make it so much easier to create clean sections by yourself.”

For those not quite ready to take the permanent plunge, but who still want to switch up their colour, Mikey suggests opting for a temporary at-home wash.

“There really are some amazing temporary colour products out there nowadays, which can help you easily and effortlessly re-create a salon colour at-home, even if you’re a complete colour novice! For this season’s must have pumpkin spice shade, try the Wella Professionals Color Fresh Mask in Copper Glow – it applies in just 10 minutes and fades evenly out of the hair, so is perfect for road-testing a new hue and is an amazing option for blondes.”

“The new Revlon Professionals Nutri Color Filters Hair colour in 740 Light Copper and the Maria Nila Colour Refresh in Autumn Red are also really great, convenient colour options that will help you switch up your style without commitment.”

If you’re looking to commit to a new permanent colour and have experience doing your own hair at-home, then Mikey suggests opting for one of the following products to create a beautiful DIY copper colour.

“If you’re a bit more confident with at-home colour, then I’d recommend using the XP100 Intense Radiance Permanent Hair Colour in one of the following shades, depending on your base colour:

9.3 Very Light Golden Blonde
7.44 Intense Copper Blonde
7.32 Medium Blonde Golden Violet
9.44 Very Light Intense Copper Blonde
5.4 Light Copper Chestnut

“Remember to always do a patch test on the back of the ear before applying any colour product to your hair.”

Caring while you colour.

Regardless of the type of product or the technique you choose for your look, there’s one thing Mikey says is key, and that’s colour care.

“As much as we try, sometimes we just haven’t got time to go through the motions of applying several products to our hair, but it is so important to make sure that if you’re colouring your hair – whether that’s at a salon or at home – you’re including treatments to keep your locks looking and feeling healthy.”

“One of my favourite tips is to add a bit of conditioner, or even better, a hair masque, into your at-home colour. This creates a hard-working multi-benefit product that treats your tresses whilst it colours, creating strong, soft and healthy hair with literally no effort from you - thank me later!”
