How to control frizzy hair

How do I Treat Frizz & Flyaways?

Whether it’s caused by humidity, dehydration or heat styling one too many times, frizz is something all hair types can unfortunately fall victim to at some point. We understand how frustrating it can be, especially when you want to embrace your natural hair all year round. However, we’re here to help. From smoothing down those pesky flyways to defining your natural curls, read our guide on how to treat your hair type to the ultimate frizz-free routine.

Looking after your hair type

  • Fine Hair

Frizzy hair is always to be expected in fine hair types. What makes things worse is the moisture heavy products that help fight frizz in medium and coarse hair will weigh down hair. So when it comes to your hair care, less is definitely more. It’s important to keep a consistent hair care routine filled with keratin and moisturisers, including leave-in conditioners and clarifying shampoos, and also avoid excessive heat styling. If you can’t stay away from the heat, always make sure you apply a heat protection spray first and keep the temperature low on your styler.

  • Medium Hair

If you have medium hair it’s important to keep those frizz and flyaways at bay by using heat protection and care products that won’t weigh your hair down. With this in mind, we recommend a routine consisting of weekly/bi-weekly shampoo and conditioning to cleanse and rebalance your hair. To avoid weighing your hair down with too much moisture, fight your damage with lightweight oils and sprays.

  • Coarse Hair

If you have frizz in your coarse hair then heat will be your main culprit. Whether it’s from styling or hot water, you’ll need a routine filled with moisture to counteract it. This generally includes incorporating sprays, masks and lightweight oils infused with coconut oil, Aloe Vera and shea butter. To keep your hair frizz-free and healthy, keep heat styling to a minimum and try to hold your hairdryer six inches away when drying your hair.

Straight

Your frizz and flyaways are most likely caused by dryness and damage from heat exposure, bleaching or harsh brushing/towel-drying. To combat your flyaways, make sure you treat your hair gently by limiting your shampooing to every two days and adding in a leave-in conditioner to keep your hair moisturised. If you notice your hair getting frizzy in the day, use a dry shampoo for a quick refresh and extra hydration. If you want to take it a step further, a hydrating hair mask once a week is a great solution. Read more

Wavy

Frizz is one of the most common problems for wavy hair. What’s the key to taming those waves? A consistent hair care routine filled with moisture. However, it’s important to find products that avoid weighing your hair down and leave the dreaded greasy finish. For this reason, we recommend including clarifying shampoos, shine-enhancing serums and conditioners. Read more

Curly

If you notice frizz and flyaways in your curls then you’ll need to use care products with hydrating properties. Why? Frizzy curls often equal dry curls. These include oils (ideally silicone-free), moisturising shampoos and leave-in sprays. Make sure you also perform a deep conditioning mask every two weeks. Not only will this reduce further damage, but it will also leave your curls defined and frizz-free. Read more

Coiled

The general rule of thumb is the coarser your hair the more moisture it needs. Coarse hair is the most vulnerable hair type for dryness as the oils don’t distribute through the hair like thin or medium types. So if you want to keep your ends frizz-free, this means it’s important to stick to a care routine that is packed with moisture that allows your hair to be treated from roots to ends. As you should only wash your hair once or twice a week, add in a hair mask or hot oil treatment depending on your dryness to control the frizz. Read more

How do I avoid frizzy hair?

The key to keeping that frizz in your hair at bay is by treating it as gently as possible. Yes, this often means going easy on the heat styling and turning down the temperature, or skipping it altogether on certain days. Other things you can avoid in your care routine to leave your hair frizz-free include over-washing, rough towel-drying and thinking that you can skip the styling products before your blow-dry.

How do I smooth my hair?

When we think smooth hair we often imagine that mirror-like gloss on our favourite celebrities. While we can’t have a celebrity stylist with us at all times, it’s still possible to achieve this silky smoothness at home by mixing up your regular routine. Some of these can include turning down the temperature of your shower, skipping the heat styling for a day or two and adding a few drops of Argan oil on your hair before your blow-dry.

Straight

The key to keeping your straight locks smooth and frizz-free is having a consistent hair care routine that’s gentle. To avoid stripping the natural oils out of your hair, limit your shampoo routine to twice a week and be sure to include a moisturising conditioner on the mid-lengths to ends. For that third day grease, use a dry shampoo or Argan oil to keep your hair refreshed before your next wash. Read more

Wavy

To keep your waves smooth and crunch-free, make sure you shield your hair from heat damage with an extra dose of hydration. This means including a moisturising shampoo and conditioner filled with keratin proteins in your routine along with lightweight texture sprays and oils. Following your care regime you could also consider ‘plopping,’ a technique where you wrap your hair in a clean t-shirt or towel in bed. When you unwrap it, your wavy locks will be smooth and shiny. Curly

Keeping them consistently hydrated and moisturised is the best way to manage them, and for this reason we recommend adding a clarifying shampoo in your routine along with a leave-in conditioner specially designed to detangle your curls. How can I detangle my hair?

From sleeping with your hair down to get knocked by blustery winds, many things in your everyday schedule can leave hair filled with matted knots and tangles. However, it’s possible to get rid of them for good by giving your hair the TLC it deserves.

All Hair Types

No matter your hair type, the best solution to detangle those troublesome knots is by treating your hair as gently as possible. Tugging your hairbrush through your tangles may seem like a quick fix, but this can actually leave your hair more vulnerable to splitting and damage. Do you want to know the real answer? Use a wide-toothed comb while your hair is damp.

To give your hair the extra slip it needs to remove those tangles, the best trick is applying a leave-in conditioner. While fine hair types should keep moisture to a minimum to avoid their hair being weighed down, this will keep your hair healthy and strong as you brush it. When handling your wide-toothed comb, make sure you section your hair and start from the ends before gently working your way upwards to the roots.

How do I get curl definition?

The trick to giving your curls definition is using the right products and adopting a routine that suits your hair type. While it’s easy to think that one-size fits all when you see a curl-defining product, the truth is it that your hair type will decide what specific product you need. For example, using a moisture heavy cream on fine hair will end up making it look greasy and heavy.

Looking after your hair type

  • Fine Hair

Fine curly hair (3A/4A) is one of the most sensitive hair types as it requires moisture, but not as much as medium or thick curls. To avoid your curls becoming crunchy, less is more. When washing your hair, stick to a protein-rich conditioner and cleansing shampoo and gently massage into your ringlets. As for styling products, you’ll only need a small amount in your hair to keep it healthy, i.e. half a drop of oil and a pea-sized amount of cream. When blow-drying your hair, stick to a cool temperature setting for a longer amount of time and use a diffuser.

  • Medium Hair

While medium curls (3B/4B) will stay defined no matter how you play around with them, they are still prone to frizz and dryness. This is why you’ll need products with moisture and keratin to keep them strong and defined. However, you need to be careful as too much moisture will leave your curls looking greasy and limp. For this reason, we recommend including lightweight sprays, creams and oils in your routine while limiting your deep conditioning to once a week. Also remember that you can dry your curls by either ‘plopping’, air-drying or diffusing them on a low heat.

  • Coarse Hair

Coarse curly hair (3C/4C) is dry and tight by nature, which means you need care products filled with moisture to keep them healthy and shining. From sulphate-free shampoos to leave-in conditioners infused with jojoba oil, you have plenty of options to give your curls weightless shape and definition. As for the right styling products, we recommend including smooth curl-defining creams and gels as you twirl your rollers or fingers through your curls.

Straight

While it sounds impossible to give your straight hair curls that last, it can be done when you use the right products. Whether you choose to go for the curling iron, foam rolls or the TikTok trend of using the bathrobe belt, always remember to prime your hair for your curling with a moisture shampoo and conditioner. Be sure to apply a thermal protection spray before blow-drying your hair and keep the temperature setting low on your hairdryer and styler to avoid the drying effects of heat. To maintain your curls during the day, a hydrating spray will be perfect. Read more

Wavy

The best way you can define your waves is by remembering to add the little details in your routine that are often forgotten. In the shower, twist and scrunch a clarifying shampoo and leave-in conditioner through your curls using your fingers. After gently squeezing it out (do NOT go for the rough towel-dry method), apply a leave-in treatment evenly through your damp hair using a wide-toothed comb. From there you can either air-dry your hair or blow-dry with a diffuser on a low setting. Read more

Curly

Curly hair needs to be treated with care if you want to see each individual spiral. As you wash it, gently scrunch your shampoo and conditioner through your fingers and squeeze it out. As for the care products to leave your curls smooth and defined? Start using cleansing shampoos, lightweight oils, sulphate-free shampoos and moisturising conditioners. Don’t forget to your deep conditioning once a week to give your curls a boost of moisture! Before blow or air-drying your hair, be sure to use leave-in treatments such as oils and sprays to maintain its natural moisture. Read more
